Varsity Head Coach: Ed Purpura
Ed Purpura is a graduate of Severna Park High School. In his senior year, he led the Falcon Cross Country Team to its first County Championship, finishing second overall. Ed was coached by Andy Borland, Jim Patton and R. Thomas Powell. Following graduation, he ran for Anne Arundel Community College, the University of Maryland, and Towson State University.
Prior to coaching at Severna Park, Coach Purpura coached at Meade, Glen Burnie and Broadneck High Schools, consistently producing winning teams.
Since 1988, Coach Purpura has been at Severna Park. Under his direction and leadership, the Cross Country and Track Teams have produced several individual and team County, Region and State champions and he has received “Coach of the Year” honors more than a dozen times. Most recently, the 2005 and 2006 Girls Cross Country Teams won the Maryland State Team title.
Assistant Men’s Cross Country and Track Coach: Josh Alcombright
Josh Alcombright is originally from upstate New York. He attended the State University of New York (SUNY), in Brockport, where he ran both cross country and track.
Before joining the Severna Park staff as Assistant, Coach Alcombright coached at Northeast High School for seven years.
Coach Alcombright teaches at Severna Park Middle School (SPMS).
Assistant Men’s Cross Country Coach: Justin Marvel
Justin Marvel is a graduate of Severna Park High School. In his junior and senior years, he led Falcon Cross Country Teams to the County Championships, and was the Anne Arundel County individual champion in 1999.
This is Coach Marvel’s second year as an assistant coach at Severna Park.
Assistant Women’s Coach - Mary Seidel
Mary Seidel is a native of Pennsylvania; and, as a graduate of Penn State University, is a true Nittany Lion.
Coach Seidel starts her sixth year as assistant cross country coach in the Fall 2007.
For the past 8 years Coach Seidel has been a substitute teacher in SPHS and is working towards her Masters degree in Special Education.
