Varsity Head Coach - Jamie Leventry

Leventry Named New SPHS Volleyball Coach
By Paul Lancione - Severna Park Voice

Severna Park High School (SPHS) Athletic Director Wayne Mook recently announced that Jamie Leventry, 28, will be the new varsity volleyball coach. Leventry, a volunteer assistant for the team last season, has been a volleyball coach at various levels for the last 5 years, and takes over for the departing Julie Allen, who spent four years on the Falcon sideline.

"I see great potential at Severna Park. I heard Julie might be leaving, so it was an easy opportunity for me to step in and take over the position," said Leventry. "I'm looking forward to it and I want to get the program back to where it was in the early 90's when (Tim) Dunbar was there."

Leventry's coaching resume includes a two-year stint with the Bay Area Volleyball Academy (BAVA) and two years with the University of Maryland's Women's Club team. He returned to BAVA this year to coach the Breakers, a 17 & Under Girls team. The thought of molding a program is what sparked his interest in taking over at Severna Park.

In addition to working with BAVA, Leventry has done a lot of work with the volleyball programs at the new Maryland SportsPlex. He runs a number of youth camps and clinics, which "run pretty much year round." Starting in July he will begin working with beginners (ages 9-14) and advanced (15-18) players, but once the high school season rolls around, Leventry assures he will be 100% committed to the Falcons.

"My goal is turn Severna Park into a powerhouse program," he said. "I've been working on a few things, but the problem with this area is you can't play volleyball until your 13. There's no youth leagues around and if you look at the Green Hornets, which doesn't offer volleyball, in just about every sport the kids start playing around 5 or 6."

While there are still a few obstacles confronting the Glen Burnie native who has played volleyball since age 13 (including six years with the Junior Olympics), Leventry seems poised and ready to assume his new post at Severna Park.

"I'm very excited. I'm in the process of not only building a program at the high school, but also at the youth ranks so players can fully develop their skills and learn the game at a much younger age," he stated, before concluding, "Getting the Green Hornets involved is a definite possibility."

During the upcoming high school season, Lauren Boyd will continue to be an assistant, while Joe Parks remains the JV coach.
